Teenager Guns Down 8 At Russia University; Indian Students Safe

In a daring act, a teenaged student shot dead at least eight people and wounded many more at Perm State University in Russia on Monday.

The gunman, identified by local media as an 18-year-old student of the medical university, was alive and being treated at a hospital, according to Investigative Committee, which handles investigations into major crimes. Reuters, however, quoted a university spokesperson as saying that the gunman was killed.

All Indian students at the Perm State university are safe, informed Indian embassy in Russia.

“Shocked at horrific attack at Perm State University in Russia; our deep condolences for loss of life and best wishes for early recovery of those injured. Embassy is in touch with local authorities and representatives of Indian students,” Indian embassy tweeted.

Video published in local media and social media shows students jumping out of second-floor windows to escape from the gunman at the university in the city of Perm, located 1,300 km east of Moscow.

“I have thought about this for a long time, it’s been years and I realized the time had come to do what I dreamt of,” the gunman wrote on a social media account attributed to him, Reuters reported. He also reportedly posted a picture of himself posing with a rifle, helmet and ammunition on social media.
