Third Bridge Collapses Within A Week In Bihar

Patna: An under-construction bridge collapsed in Bihar’s East Champaran district on Sunday, the third such incident in the state in less than a week.

No casualty has been reported in the mishap in Motihari’s Ghorasahan block.

The 16-metre-long bridge was being built over a canal by the state’s Rural Works Department (RWD) to connect Amwa village to other areas of the block.

It was being built at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore.

“The exact cause of the incident is not yet known. It is a serious matter and a departmental inquiry has been ordered. Strict action will be taken against those found guilty,” PTI quoted Additional Chief Secretary Dipak Kumar Singh as saying.

“There are reports that a section of locals initially objected to the construction of certain pillars of the bridge. Police are looking into this matter,” District Magistrate Saurabh Jorwal said.

On Saturday, a bridge came down in Siwan district. It was being built over a canal to connect villages of Daraunda and Maharajganj blocks.

On Tuesday, a 180-metre-long newly-constructed bridge came crashing down in Bihar’s Araria district.

Eyebrows have been raised in view of the frequent mishaps.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav lashed out at the state government and Central government.

“Several murders are being reported in Bihar, bridges are collapsing, railway accidents are taking place, papers are getting leaked. This is a ‘double engine’ government,” Tejashwi mocked.
