Bhubaneswar: Continuing its crackdown against mules engaged in transporting hydroponic weed, the Customs (Preventive) Commissionerate on Tuesday detained three persons from Uttar Pradesh at Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) with the contraband.
The highly potent variety of ganja is said to be worth over Rs 30 crore. This is one of the biggest drug hauls at the Bhubaneswar airport in recent times.
According to sources, the customs officers stopped the person after he arrived here from Bangkok. The contraband were found concealed in six suitcases during routine baggage checks. They are being interrogated to uncover the source of the narcotics and intended destination, suspecting a broader international smuggling network with Bhubaneswar as a key transit point.
In January, a Kerala native was arrested from Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) after he was found carrying 7 kg of hydroponic weed concealed inside snacks packets during scanning of his check-in baggage.
The high-potency marijuana, cultivated using a soil-less hydroponic method, is valued at over Rs 1 crore per kg.
