Paris: China is not the only opposer to Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs.
The European Union (EU) made its intention clear as well, approving tariffs that will hit around $23.2 billion of US goods in retaliation to the 25% duties President Trump has imposed on the bloc’s steel and aluminium exports.
A majority of the EU’s 27 member states on Wednesday voted in favour of the penalties, some of which will take effect in mid-April, reported Bloomberg.
The tariffs, designed to target politically-sensitive states in the US, are on products like soybeans from Louisiana, home to House Speaker Mike Johnson, as well as diamonds, agricultural products, poultry and motorcycles.
However, the European Commission said in a statement that the countermeasures can be suspended at any time “should the US agree to a fair and balanced negotiated outcome.”
Earlier in the day, China upped its tariff charge against US goods to 84%, to counter Trump ramping up duties against Beijing to a staggering 104%.
