Bhopal: Tragedy struck five good samaritans in Madhya Pradesh’s Guna district as they died after inhaling poisonous gas inside a well.
Six people had dived into a well in Dharnavada village to try and rescue a calf which had accidentally fallen inside on Tuesday.
One person managed to come out of the well soon after going in as he felt uneasy, but the other five fell unconscious after some time, police said.
Police personnel, along with staff from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) unit of Gas Authority Of India Ltd (GAIL) and State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF), engaged in trying to rescue the trapped men.
Overcoming the impediment caused by 12 feet of water inside the well, the rescuers first brought out three people, who were declared in hospital.
The other two were also ultimately pulled out of the well, but they didn’t survive either.
“Six people had entered a well to rescue a calf that had fallen into the well. One villager Pawan Kushwaha came out immediately after feeling uneasy while five got unconscious in the well,” Guna district collector Kishor Kanyal said.
“The rescue team brought three villagers out of the well and they were declared dead at Civil hospital,” he added while rescue operation was underway for two others.
According to Guna SP Ankit Soni, the well is located in a mango orchard.
“On Tuesday morning, some people had come to pluck mangoes. A calf came which was nearby was chased, and fell into the well. To save the calf, six people entered the well one after the other,” Soni said.
