Sydney: In a heartbreaking incident in the Hornsby suburb of Sydney, 33-year-old Samanvitha Dhareshwar, who was eight months pregnant, lost her life and that of her unborn child when she was struck by a car after a two-vehicle collision.

According to New South Wales police, Dhareshwar was walking with her husband and their three-year-old son on George Street around 8 pm on Friday when tragedy struck. A silver Kia Carnival, driven by a 48-year-old man, slowed down to allow the family to cross toward a nearby car park entrance.

At that moment, a white BMW sedan — allegedly driven by 19-year-old P-plate driver Aaron Papazoglu — slammed into the rear of the Kia, pushing it forward into Dhareshwar. Paramedics treated her at the scene, and she was rushed to Westmead Hospital in critical condition. Tragically, both she and her unborn child succumbed to their injuries.

Both drivers escaped physical harm but were taken for mandatory testing at Hornsby Hospital. Subsequently, the BMW driver was arrested at his home in Wahroonga in the early hours of Saturday.

He has since been charged with multiple offences, including dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death, and causing the loss of a foetus under New South Wales’ “Zoe’s Law.” During his first court appearance, Magistrate Ray Plibersek denied him bail, calling the case “an absolutely tragic one” and noting it was “a terrible outcome for two families.”

Samanvitha Dhareshwar was a qualified IT systems analyst, working for Alsco Uniforms, according to her LinkedIn profile.

Assistant Commissioner David Driver of the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command described the crash as “very confronting,” saying that the involvement of a child made the incident even more tragic.

Local residents have gathered near the crash site, leaving floral tributes and heartfelt messages in memory of Dhareshwar and her child.
