Kolkata: Mild to moderate tremors were felt in parts of Kolkata, parts of Odisha and various regions of Bangladesh as an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 struck Myanmar on Tuesday night, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
As per EMSC data, the earthquake struck 70 miles east of Akyab in Myanmar.
The quake was said to be at a depth of 10 kilometres, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said.
People in some areas of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack felt mild tremors a little after 9 pm.
“Was on my bed and felt it rock a bit. Came on X to know that there was an earthquake in the Kalinga Sagar near Myanmar,” tweeted a Bhubaneswar-based X user.
People residing in some highrises in Cuttack also experienced a mild swaying.
Various parts of West Bengal, including the capital city of Kolkata, as well as neighbouring Bangladesh eperienced the quake around 9.08 pm.
In Kolkata, several people rushed out of their homes and offices as soon as they sensed an earthquake. It didn’t last beyond a few seconds, and no damage or injuries have been reported thus far.
Many took to social media to share their experiences.
“Earthquake in Kolkata? Did anyone else feel it?” posted one user.
“My bed was shaking,” shared one person.
“We just felt an earthquake sitting at the office,” wrote one netizen.
According to some social media users, there was a mild tremor in the early hours of the morning. Not many felt it as they were asleep.
For Myanmar, it was the third quake in the last 70 hours, according to EMSC.
