Trouble Mounts For Odisha Govt In ‘Puri Custody Death’; After HC, NHRC Seeks Detailed Report

Delhi/Bhubaneswar: Shortly after BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra filed a petition over the alleged custodial death in Puri, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday directed the Odisha Chief Secretary and DGP to submit detailed reports on the matter within four weeks.

While expressing displeasure over the incident despite the Supreme Court’s guidelines on the custodial treatment of accused/suspects, the rights panel asked the state government to submit copies of the FIR, arrest and inspection memos of K Ramesh of Loknath Road area in Puri town, who allegedly died in police custody.

It has been asked to notify whether the family members of the victim were informed about his arrest.

Apart from the medico-legal certificates, videotapes of autopsy, viscera and the forensic reports on the exact cause of his death, the state authorities have also been asked to submit the magisterial inquiry report in the case.

Earlier in the day, the Orissa High Court had asked the government to submit a detailed investigation report pertaining to the case on Monday (November 23).
