Pune: There’s a twist in the case of a Pune IT professional who was allegedly raped in her flat by a courier delivery agent on Wednesday evening.
Police said on Friday that the suspect detained in connection with the incident was the woman’s friend, and not a stranger who allegedly gained entry by posing as a courier delivery boy.
It was the woman herself who took a selfie with him and typed a threatening message in her phone, police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said.
“They know each other for a couple of years and belong to the same community,” PTI quoted Kumar as saying, thereby casting doubts on the woman’s version of how the events unfolded.
The 22-year-old techie had claimed that a delivery agent entered her flat in Kondhwa area claiming to deliver a document, and forced himself on her as she was alone. She lost consciousness, and when she was back to her senses, the man had left.
She had also told police that the accused clicked a selfie using her phone, and left a message warning that he had taken her pictures and would release them on social media if she reported the incident.
On questioning the suspect, who happens to be a highly qualified professional, police found that the woman herself had taken the selfie — which originally showed his face clearly — edited it and typed the purported threatening message.
No chemical spray had been used to make the woman unconscious, the police commissioner said.
“We are still ascertaining why the victim made allegations of rape and it is still under investigation as the girl’s mental state is not good at present,” he informed.
