Bhubaneswar/Khurda: Two wanted criminals were injured in police encounters in Bhubaneswar and Khurda in the wee hours of Thursday.

Wanted criminal Susant Majhi from Nayagarh sustained bullet injury in his left knee in an exchange of fire with police while plotting a dacoity with his associates at Kalinganagar here. Acting on a tip-off, police raided the area around 5 am. Seeing the police, Majhi opened three rounds of fire. He was injured in the retaliatory firing.

Police later seized a 9 mm pistol and five live cartridges from his possession.

The injured criminal was rushed to the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar and later shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

This was the sixth encounter by the Commissionerate Police this year.

According to police, several cases of dacoity and attempt to murder are pending against Susant in different police stations in Bhubaneswar, Khurda and Nayagarh. He was also involved in the recent Rs 60 lakh loot from Tangi in Khurda district.

In the other encounter, Khurda police nabbed a dreaded criminal Jamshed Khan at Rameswar.

Acting on a tip-off about the presence of Khan inside a forest, a joint team of Tangi police and Nirakar police raided the area. Khan hurled a country bomb at the police in which the IICs of Tangi and Nirakarpur police stations were injured. He was hit by a bullet in his left knee as police retaliated.

Police later rushed him to the district headquarters hospital in Khurda from where he was shifted to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar.

Several cases of dacoity and loots are pending against Khan in several police stations in Khurda district, police added.
