Two Women Killed Over Sorcery Suspicion, Accused Surrenders

Baripada: Panic gripped Madhupur village under Rairangpur police limits in Mayurbhanj district following the death of two women who were killed by a man of the village suspecting them practising witchcraft.

The accused Shyam Basker later surrendered before the police after attacking another woman of the village with a spear. The condition of the injured woman, who is undergoing treatment at the Jamda Community Health Centre (CHC) is stated to be critical.

According to police, the accused had been suspecting the two women for practising sorcery for which he had no child since three years of his marriage.

The incident took place in the afternoon on Sunday when Basker barged into the house and attacked the two women with an axe killing them on the spot. Later, he tried to kill another woman, a kin of the two deceased women with a spear. But as the woman screamed, he fled the area and later surrendered in the Rairangpur police station.

Police later went to the village and took the bodies of the two women to the hospital for post-mortem and admitted the injured woman at the Jamda CHC.
