New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Thursday gave the go-ahead to One Nation, One Election proposal, which aims to synchronize Parliamentary and Assembly elections in the country. A comprehensive bill to implement simultaneous elections in the country is likely to come up, reported the ANI.
On September 2 last year, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Central government established a high-level panel to examine the feasibility of the initiative.
The panel was chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind. After gathering suggestions, viewpoints, and comments from various stakeholders, the panel submitted its report on March 14, 2024.
“The recommendations of the high-level committee has been accepted by the Union Cabinet on one nation, one election. As you are aware, elections were held simultaneously from 1951 to 1967. In 1999, the Law Commission in its 170th report recommended that one election to Lok Sabha and all legislative assemblies should be held in 5 years for development of the country, to reduce election expenses and to keep the law and order and criminal justice system free as the cops get busy…(during election)..as they are deployed in maintaining the election law and order. This all disruptions won’t be there. This will also be in align with the aspirations with the youth of the country,” said Ashwini Vaishnaw, minister of Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & IT, told reporters.
