The United States on Sunday overtook Italy in the number of deaths from COVID-19.
The world’s biggest economy is now leading with 20,580 deaths as well as the number of infections which has crossed 5 lakh. The US recently became the first country to post more than 2,000 deaths per day.
New York, which is the worst-hit city, is seeing a stabilising death rate of around 700-800 per day for the last few days.
All 50 states in the US have declared a disaster response, which is a first for the country.
With 533,115 positive cases already, the White House is expecting 2 lakh deaths from the virus.
The country is under social distancing recommendation till April 30.
16 million jobs have been lost and this is putting pressure on President Donald Trump, who had earlier hoped to lift the lockdown measures by April 15.
Globally, more than 1 lakh people have died from the virus and around 17.8 lakh have been infected. A little more than 4 lakh have recovered so far.
