Washington: The United States has issued a security alert amid growing tensions following its military strikes on Iran, cautioning citizens about potential terrorist attacks and cyber threats. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a National Terrorism Advisory System Bulletin highlighting a “heightened threat environment” across the country.
The alert, issued on June 22, will remain in effect through September 22, as officials fear retaliation in various forms, including cyberattacks, hate crimes, and lone-wolf attacks inspired by the conflict.
The DHS bulletin stated: “The United States remains in a heightened threat environment, and we expect the threat environment to become more dynamic as domestic actors and foreign terrorist organizations could seek to exploit developments related to the conflict with Iran.”
The advisory warns of possible attacks by individuals influenced by pro-Iranian rhetoric or extremist messaging. The bulletin also noted: “Iranian government-linked actors and pro-Iranian hackers could engage in cyberattacks against critical infrastructure or government entities.”
Officials expressed concern over the potential for violence at public events or against communities that might be perceived as targets by extremists. The DHS urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity through its “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign.
Meanwhile, the US State Department has issued a “worldwide Caution” advisory for American citizens abroad. “There is an increased potential for anti-U.S. demonstrations, acts of violence, or attacks against U.S. citizens and interests overseas,” officials stated, as reported by Hindustan Times.
Security has been stepped up in major US cities, including New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., where law enforcement agencies are intensifying patrols near critical infrastructure, religious institutions, and diplomatic facilities.
The authorities are particularly monitoring online spaces for potential indicators of mobilization, while also preparing for possible cyber intrusions targeting US networks.
