Bhubaneswar: After ousting non-students from the hostels from its Vani Vihar campus in Bhubaneswar, Utkal University has launched a drive to evict unauthorised occupants from its staff quarters.
The university, which has over 200 staff quarters for teaching and non-teaching employees, has found more than a dozen of these are illegally occupied by outsiders.
As per information, around 40 staff quarters are lying in ruins and steps will be taken for the renovation of the dilapidated structures.
Notably, several angry students entered the vice-chancellor’s office and demanded immediate steps to vacate the illegal residents and ensure a safe campus environment.
It was alleged that some staff quarters, meant exclusively for university employees, had been rented out to outsiders who have been staying there for years. This apart, slum dwellers have unlawfully settled near the university boundary.
“Notices have already been issued to the illegal occupants, and they have been asked to vacate by today. Police force will be engaged if needed,” said ACP (Zone-5) Bishwaranjan Senapati.
The notice issued on September 9 read, ”This is to notify that, all the unauthorised occupants of University quarters must vacate those quarters by 5 pm tomorrow, otherwise University will take actions according to (the) law.”
Utkal University Registrar Swati Mishra said the university is coordinating with the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the eviction of slum dwellers in the surrounding areas. Notices have also been issued to them.
