Very Heavy Rain Alert For Odisha As Low Pressure Over Bay To Intensify Further

Bhubaneswar: With the low pressure over north-west Bay of Bengal and adjoining north coastal Odisha set to intensify further during the next 72 hours, the India Meteorological Department on Monday issued a red warning for extremely heavy rainfall in five districts in the state.

“A monsoon trough passing through the centre of the low-pressure area over the north-west Bay of Bengal and adjoining north coastal Odisha will further strengthen the low pressure which will move west-north-west during the next 72 hours. Under its influence, there will be extremely heavy rainfall in some parts of the south and interior districts in the next 24 hours with isolated heavy rainfall at one or two places across Odisha,” the IMD said in a mid-day bulletin.

It also said that the heavy rainfall will cause water-logging in low lying areas and localized flash floods in some areas, damage to kutcha houses and informal roads and landslides in hilly areas. Apart from traffic disruption, water-logging in the low-lying areas and under-pass roads in urban areas, there will be some damage to horticulture and standing crops in some areas due to inundation.

The IMD has also advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along the Odisha coast, north Bay of Bengal and adjoining central Bay of Bengal during the next 48 hours as squally weather with surface wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph will make the sea condition very rough.
