Jagatsinghpur: Veteran Odia Jatra artist Devi Prasad Rath, widely known by his stage name ‘Mama’, passed away on Wednesday following a cardiac arrest. He was 71.
The jatra icon suffered a heart attack while asleep at his home at Paradipgarh in Jagatsinghpur district early in the morning, family sources said.
After beginning his journey as a child artist in plays, Rath had a distinguished career spanning over four decades in the Odia jatra industry. Known for his versatility, he performed in over 100 productions and remained one of the most respected figures in the performing arts circle in the state.
Moving from drama to Jatra, Rath played roles ranging from hero and villain to elder characters that earned him widespread acclaim. Apart from acting, he also directed several plays and collaborated with numerous opera troupes across the state
He formally retired from the Jatra stage in 2017, marking the end of a 42-year journey that defined an era of Odia travelling theatre. His last appearance was in the play “Thaki Dela Bandhu Thikana Bele,” remembered by audiences for his expressive performance and natural dialogue delivery.
In Jatra circles, Rath’s name became synonymous with dedication and artistry. Widely known as Mama, his portrayals were known for emotional intensity and effortless humour.
As news of his demise spread, jatra artistes, technicians, and fans gathered at his home to pay their last respects. The family placed his body for public viewing, allowing admirers to offer a final farewell to a performer who shaped the cultural identity of Odia folk theatre. Rath’s legacy continues to inspire younger performers
