Villagers Stage Dharna Over Water-Logging In Paddy Fields In Odisha’s Ganjam

Berhampur: Hundreds of villagers and farmers staged a dharna in protest against water-logging in their crop fields near under-construction Kainphulia bridge on Thursday.

The irate villagers of five panchayats including Nuagaon, Babanpur and others under Aska block in Ganjam district said they resorted to agitation as rain water got stagnated in hundreds of acres of paddy field in the area due to construction of an approach road to facilitate the construction of the bridge.

They demanded immediate steps by the district administration to discharge the stagnated water by cutting the approach road or any other means. They also demanded to make an estimate of the crop loss and compensation.

Besides, they wanted action against the contractor, engineer and other officers for the faulty design of the approach road.

However, the villagers withdrew the agitation after the district administration cut the approach road and released the stagnated water.
