The recent incident in Bhubaneswar, in which one person was killed and another injured after the roof of an under construction building connecting the domestic terminal with international at Biju Patnaik International Airport, is not the first of its kind at an airport in India.

When it comes to airport mishaps, Chennai perhaps tops the list with quite a record. Authorities are at a loss for explanations becuase mishaps have been consistently happening in an airport that was modelled after London’s Heathrow terminal.

August 11, 2013: Portion Of A Ceiling Collapses At Chennai Airport

This was reported to be the second such incident in three months. A portion of the false ceiling at the domestic departure terminal of Chennai airport caved in early in the morning. No one was injured since the incident occurred around 2.30 am when movement of passengers was almost nil, airport sources said. Earlier, on March 12, 2013, a fire had broken out at the airport.

April 30, 2015: False Ceiling Collapses at Chennai Airport, None Injured

A false ceiling came down crashing at the domestic airport. No one suffered injuries. By this time, this was the 49th incident of collapses involving either glass panels, doors, fixtures or ceilings at the new domestic and international terminals since they were inaugurated in January 2013. 

June 29, 2016: Glass Panel Collapses For The 63rd Time At Chennai Airport

The glass ceiling collapsed at Chennai Airport. By this time, it was the 63rd time such an incident had taken place since the new domestic terminal was inaugurated in 2013.

Feb 8, 2013: Flyover Bridge At Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport Collapses

The collapse of a flyover bridge being built at Mumbai’s main airport killed three people and injured another seven. The flyover was part of a major construction project for a new terminal 

July 31, 2019: A Portion Of A Slab Falls Down At Mumbai Airport

A portion of a slab fell down at nearly 10:30 pm at the Mumbai International Airport. There were no injuries in the incident.  Water leakage was suspected to be the reason behind the incident. 

Sept 21, 2019: Imphal Airport building collapses

Eight labourers were injured, including one in critical condition when a portion of the ground floor was collapsed right after completion of concrete layering of the single floor cargo terminal building at around 5:45 pm. A total of 50 workers were engaged at the site.

July 19, 2015:  False Ceiling Collapses at Goa Airport

Two passengers were injured when a false ceiling at Goa Airport collapsed. The new terminal building was inaugurated in December, 2013.

Part of a ceiling collapsed in the Philippines’ biggest airport, slightly injuring a foreign passenger, the latest in a series of incidents at a facility seen as among the worst in the world. The collapse at a restaurant at Terminal 3 of Manila airport “slightly scratched” a male foreign passenger.
