Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar aka DKS has been meeting hundreds and thousands of people at Praja Seva events to hear their problems and find a solution.
At one such event in Piriyapatna recently, DKS faced a grievance that he could never have imagined.
One farmer appealed to the chief minister to introduce a scheme that will help unmarried men, especially farmers, find brides!
The farmer said many men were facing deep frustration because they were unable to get married.
He claimed that the problem had become so serious across Karnataka that some men were dying by suicide.
A stumped DKS said, “What? What has happened?”
The farmer then explained the issue in detail.
“There are so many men aged between 35 and 40 who are still unmarried. Poor fellows are dying by suicide. They have become frustrated with life. They need women to marry,” he told the chief minister.
“Sir, please. Poor people are dying by suicide. Please, something has to be done,” he said.
“They have spent so much money. They have built houses and own a land, but nobody is willing to give their daughters to marry them. If some arrangement can be made, it would address the lives of lakhs of young men. I humbly request you to do something for them,” the farmer pleaded.
He also said parents were unwilling to marry their daughters in farming families. “If daughters are not given to the farmers who grow crops and provide food for everyone, what will happen,” he asked.
He stressed that it was not just his personal problem, but one faced by people across Karnataka.
The chief minister heard him out, and laughed it off.
