Mariupol: They say adversity brings out the best in human beings.

In an act of humanity worthy of a hero, Ukrainian policeman Vyacheslav Abroskin reportedly offered himself as a hostage to Russian troops, in exchange for the evacuation of children from the war-devastated city of Mariupol.

According to NEXTA TV, the police officer asked Russian troops to provide an opportunity to help the children get out of the city.

“My life belongs to me alone and I offer it in exchange for the lives of children who still remain in Mariupol,” Abroskin’s translated Facebook post read.

More than 100,000 people — including women and children — are trapped in Mariupol without food, water and electricity.

Russian forces last week hit a theatre in Mariupol, reportedly killing 300 people who had taken shelter in the building. A hospital and school have also been struck by Russian missiles.

Mariupol residents have been dumping bodies in mass graves on the outskirts of the city, reported AFP.
