Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra claimed on Wednesday that she was injured after group of people hurled eggs at a venue in West Bengal where she was meeting party workers.
She also shared a video and accused the police of inaction.
Taking to X, Moitra wrote: “Currently being attacked by @bjp4india goons with @wbpolice watching on.” She also shared a purported video of the incident.
Men in a crowd can be seen throwing eggs towards a window of the building from where she is heard speaking inside, in the video shared by the Krishnanagar MP. The footage also shows people cheering after the eggs hit the window.
Moitra also shared another video message addressed to West Bengal DGP Siddh Nath Gupta, in which she alleged that a mob gathered outside a party meeting at a private office in her constituency and pelted eggs and stones at the venue, injuring her when she approached a window.
She had called the DGP and shared the location, but alleged that while police arrived, they did not disperse the crowd and instead “stood and watched” as the attack continued, the MP claimed and urged Gupta to intervene and fulfil the police’s duty of dispersing the mob.
The egg attack, if it did happen, is not an isolated incident, with several similar cases reported involving TMC leaders in West Bengal in recent weeks.
The first TMC leader to be attacked with eggs was the party’s MP and national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. Eggs were thrown at him on May 30 when he was at Sonarpur in the South 24-parganas district to meet families affected by alleged post-poll violence.
Bannerjee claimed that he received minor injuries due to the attack and went to two private hospitals that carried out tests but did not admit him. The leader called the incident “political violence and state-sponsored terrorism” and expressed gratitude to Rahul Gandhi for standing by him.
In a more recent case, TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh was also targeted when eggs were hurled at him outside party supremo Mamata Banerjee’s Kalighat residence in south Kolkata on June 15. He filed a complaint at Kalighat Police Station, seeking immediate action against those involved.
TMC youth leader Soumitra Banerjee was also allegedly attacked with eggs while being taken to court by the West Bengal Police.
