New Delhi: A dramatic scene unfolded in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday amid fiery exchanges between Home Minister Amit Shah and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi during a debate on electoral reforms.

When the LoP challenged Shah to debate him on the contents of his three press conferences on ‘vote chori’, the leaders traded sharp barbs. The Home Minister responded to the interruptions, saying that Parliament would not run on the latter’s principle.

“I will decide the order of my speech,” the Home Minister said.

Further asserting his authority, Shah also reminded the members of his 30-year tenure as a member of Vidhan Sabha and Parliament.

Amit Shah shut Rahul Gandhi down in style.
RaGa tried to hijack the moment, and Shah replied…
“Parliament won’t run on your directions. You don’t decide my speaking order.”🔥🔥

Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Open Challenge’

“I had asked a question yesterday. For the first time in India’s history, a decision was taken that election commissioners will be given full immunity. He (Shah) must tell us the thinking behind this. He talked of Haryana, he gave one example, but there are numerous examples (of vote chori),” the Congress MP said.

Thereafter, he challenged Shah to have a debate on the press conferences.

Won’t Allow Intruders, Says Amit Shah

Shah, on the other hand, accused the opposition of spreading falsehoods on SIR. He asked whether the democracy could be safe when the prime minister and the chief minister were decided by “ghuspetiye (infiltrators)”. “The first SIR was conducted in 1952, when Jawaharlal Nehru was the prime minister and Congress was in power. Then it happened in 1957 when Nehru was there, the third happened in 1961 and Nehru was there. Then it happened during Lal Bahadur Shastri’s time, then during Indira Gandhi’s time, Rajiv Gandhi’s time, Narasimha Rao’s time, and then in 2002 during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s time which continued till Manmohan Singh’s time,” he said.

According to Shah, during these previous episodes, no party had opposed the process because it was a process of keeping polls clean for a healthy democracy.

As Shah spoke, the Opposition walked out of the Lok Sabha.

Responding to the boycott, Shah said it would have no impact on the government’s efforts, and reiterated that “not a single infiltrator will be allowed to vote”.

He also scolded opposition MPs for interrupting his speech. “Do bade bolte hai tab beech me nahi bolte,” he said.

This statement prompted protests.
