Bengaluru: Greed can be a dangerous thing because it can make a person lose his wits and common sense.
A daily wager paid the ultimate price driven by the lure of getting an autorickshaw for free.
The tragedy unfolded when the victim, identified as Shabari M, and his six friends were bursting firecrackers on Diwali night.
All seven friends were allegedly in an inebriated state when Shabari agreed to take up a challenge from his friends to sit on a cardboard box filled with firecrackers.
According to police, Konanakunte resident Shabari was told he would be given an autorickshaw if he took up the challenge, but if he failed, he would have to leave the town.
CCTV footage shows Shabari sitting on the box of firecrackers and his friends running to a safe distance. Moments later, as the box explodes, Shabari is thrown on the road in a grievously injured state.
