Kolkata: It was a red letter day in the BJP’s 46-year history as its first chief minister in West Bengal was sworn in on Saturday.

It was Suvendu Adhikari’s day, having spearheaded the BJP’s battle to oust the 15-year-old Trinamool Congress (TMC) government by defeating Mamata Banerjee in her own backyard, Bhabanipore.

Almost the entire top leadership of the saffron party, including all its chief ministers, were present at the oath-taking ceremony of Suvendu.

Yet, the headline grabber at Saturday’s grand function at Brigade Parade ground was none other than Narendra Modi.

From touching the feet of 98-year-old BJP worker Makhanlal Sarkar to warmly embracing Suvendu, the Prime Minister drew the loudest cheers.

But the one moment which will remain etched in the minds of over one lakh people present at the sprawling came soon after he arrived at the venue.

As the MC announced his entry to the huge stage, Modi waved to the crowd with both hands, before kneeling and fully bowing on the floor to thank the people of West Bengal.

“I bow to West Bengal’s Jana Shakti. The people’s blessings are the truest strength of democracy and the noblest source of public resolve,” Modi wrote on X and shared a video.

The BJP won 207 seats out of 293 for which election took place in West Bengal last month, reducing TMC to 80.

After the swearing-in ceremony got over, the Prime Minister met some family members of BJP workers who had lost their lives in incidents of political violence in the state.

Modi interacted with the families of Debasish Mondal, Soumitra Ghoshal and Ananda Paul, expressing his heartfelt condolences and assuring them that the party is with karyakartas always.

BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya shared a picture of Modi with families of victims.

“BJP stands with karyakartas, forever.. After the swearing-in ceremony, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the families of slain BJP workers Late Shri Debasish Mondal, Late Shri Soumitra Ghoshal and Late Shri Ananda Paul. Their sacrifice for ideology, democracy and the people of West Bengal will never be forgotten. BJP stands with every karyakarta and their families, in struggle and in service, always,” Malviya wrote.
