Baleshwar: A tragic late-night wall collapse claimed the lives of a 65-year-old woman and her 18-year-old grandson, while critically injuring her 18-year-old granddaughter at Kapasuda village under Netua panchayat within Jaleswar police limits in Odisha’s Baleshwar district.
The victims have been identified as Radhika and her grandson Jyoti Prakash Swain, both of whom were killed instantly after getting trapped under heavy debris. The incident occurred around 9:30 pm when an adjoining mud wall from a neighbouring structure suddenly gave way, crushing the asbestos-roofed section of Radhika’s home where she and her grandchildren were asleep.
Radhika’s granddaughter, Smrutirekha Swain, suffered severe waist injuries in the collapse. Local residents rushed to the scene, pulled the trapped family members from the rubble before shifting Smrutirekha to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Several other family members had a close shave in the incident, though Radhika’s 31-year-old son, Uttam, and his two-month-old infant, Aroadhya, sustained minor injuries. Uttam’s wife, Debirani, and their five-year-old daughter, Ananya, were also inside the house at the time of the collapse.
While a pall of gloom has enveloped the entire Kapasuda village following the tragedy, local authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident.
