Angul: Police have arrested a woman for duping her aunt of more than Rs 20 lakh in the district.
According to police sources, 34-year-old Nibedita Pradhan had come to stay in the house of her father’s brother at Kaniha under Chhendipada police limits to look after aunt Lili Sahu whose husband had died. After winning the confidence of Lili by her service and good behaviour, Nibedita was handling her aunt’s bank accounts and ATM cards.
In 2015, Lili filed a complaint at Kaniha police station alleging theft of her gold ornaments. Following investigation, police recovered the stolen ornaments from some jewellers. Later, suspecting the role of Nibedita in the theft, Lili checked her bank accounts and found all her money withdrawn.
When Lili questioned Nibedita and her husband regarding the money, the latter admitted to have taken it and promised to return the amount soon. As the couple did not give back the money for four years, Lili filed a case in a court which directed the police to investigate the matter.
After registering a case in this regard, Chhendipada police came to know from investigation that Rs 11,98,800 was transferred from Lili’s bank account to the account of Nibedita’s husband and Rs 1,70,000 to different shop owners. Besides, the couple had withdrawn Rs 9,84,234 from Lili’s accounts with different ATM cards.
Police recovered Rs 10 lakh from Nibedita’s husband and returned it to Lili. Besides, they have arrested Nibedita and forwarded her to court.
