Cuttack: A partially buried body of a woman was found on a remote stretch of the Kathajodi riverbed under Baranga police limits in Odisha’s Cuttack on Thursday.
Her identity has not been ascertained yet.
According to sources, the portion of the riverbed, where the body was found, is not accessible by vehicles and is difficult to reach by foot. It is suspected that stray dogs may have dug up the sand, exposing the remains and leading to the grim discovery.
Speaking to the media, Cuttack DCP Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo said that the PCR received information about a partially buried body this morning. “After a preliminary spot visit, the body was exhumed while being videographed. The deceased appears to be a middle-aged woman. No homicidal blood was found at the spot, since the body was recovered from a riverbed, some samples have been collected for tests,” he said.
Clothes and a mat, which police suspect could have been used to wrap the victim while being transported to the spot, have been seized.
The DCP stated that a scientific team is gathering clues at the site, while dog squads are scanning the vicinity for leads. “Visual inspection by the scientific team suggests that the woman was buried here about 3-4 days ago. Since the body is in a decomposed state, a postmortem can only reveal about any injury marks. A lot of people from outside the state work in nearby brick kilns and engage in construction activity. Their details are being verified along with missing reports in nearby police stations,” he added.
