Koraput: A 17-year-old minor from Odisha’s Koraput district allegedly died by suicide after losing money in Indian Premier League (IPL) betting. .
The boy was found hanging from a tree in a nearby cashew grove at Sukrapur village under Dasamantapur block on Monday morning.
According to sources, the teenager had placed a bet of Rs 4,000 on the IPL final match played between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Sunday. Relying on a win for Gujarat Titans to potentially double his money, the youth unfortunately lost the gamble when the match outcomes did not favour his bet.
Preliminary investigation indicated that the minor had transferred the amount from his father’s PhonePe account. Fearing severe reprimand over the transaction, the anxious teenager allegedly went to a nearby cashew plantation this morning and took his own life. It is being suspected that this fear and financial guilt pushed him to take the extreme step.
On being informed, police rushed to the spot, seized the body, and sent it to Dasmantpur Community Health Centre (CHC) for postmortem. A case has been registered and an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances leading to his death. “We are actively tracing the transaction details to find out whose account the money was transferred to and identify the operators running this illegal betting network,” a police official involved in the probe stated.
