Bhubaneswar: Police have detained two suspected Bangladeshi nationals, who were residing in an asbestos-roofed house in Beheram Basti under Tarikunda panchayat in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district.
A cache of weapons, including a country-made gun and swords, were also seized during the raid on Sunday amid a brief scuffle, which broke out as the police team attempted to enter the premises. Two platoons of police force were deployed in the area.
Sources said 30 Bangladeshi nationals were staying at the home of a local resident, Siku Khan, in the slum and 18 among them had relocated elsewhere prior to the raid. While nearly 10 managed to give police the slip during the raid, two women were detained for questioning. “We had received credible information about the presence of illegal Bangladeshi nationals in the Tarikund area, near our beat house. When our team proceeded there, they were attacked, and a lady constable sustained injuries. We have arrested two women. The premises were subsequently searched in the presence of an executive magistrate, leading to recovery of a country-made gun and other sharp weapons. A team has been formed to nab the main accused,” SDPO R Rao to the media.
The homeowner is being questioned about providing shelter and the group’s intentions. “The raid is continuing to nab those who fled. More details will emerge post-verification,” added Jagatsinghpur SP Ankit Kumar Verma.
