Berhampur: Total knee replacement is now being done at the Sitalapalli campus of Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital in Odisha’s Ganjam district.
A procedure which is considered to be one of medical science’s modern marvels, total knee replacement provides dramatic pain relief.
Around 25 total hip replacement and total knee replacement have been conducted over the past one month by the Orthopaedics department, informed hospital Director Deba Prasd Dash.
According to Dr Ranjit Kumar Patra, Assistant Professor in Orthopaedics department of the hospital, most patients experience complete or near complete relief of arthritic knee pain after undergoing the surgery.
“Beyond pain relief, total knee replacement also restores normal alignment of the knee joint thereby improving its normal function by replacing the damaged bone and cartilage with artificial components,” he said.
“This leads to better balance and stability while improving the quality of life.”
Dr Patra said that a female patient came to the hospital complaining of right knee pain and deformity for over a year, making it difficult for her to walk properly.
Dr Patra informed that upon thorough examination, it was found that she had advanced osteoarthritis of the right knee with varus deformity and bone loss on the tibial side.
She was also found to be anaemic and hypertensive, as also hypothyroid.
Total knee replacement was planned, and considering her unstable condition, severe osteoporosis and bone loss, balancing was done with great care.
Constrained implants were fixed with bone cement, and there were no intra post-operative complications.
Anaesthesiologist Dr Sarada Prasanna Dash was part of the surgical team, along with OT staff.
