Pune: At least eight people are feared to have lost their lives and 15 were injured after a car got crushed between two container trucks on Navale bridge along the Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway, on the outskirts of Pune on Thursday.
A massive fire engulfed an oil container which reportedly lost control and rammed into the bridge. The flames spread quickly, to two or three heavy vehicles and the four-wheeler.
Videos from the accident site flooded internet, showing one of the trucks engulfed in fire. Photographs showed the mangled car that was stuck between the trucks.

Fire engines and rescue teams rushed to the scene to douse the flames and shift wounded persons to hospitals for treatment.
The accident caused a complete halt to traffic on the national highway, causing a massive congestion for several hours.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called the accident “heartbreaking,” and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the next kin of the deceased.
“The incident of some people losing their lives in the accident on the new bridge in Pune is extremely tragic and heartbreaking. I offer my heartfelt tribute to those who lost their lives in this incident. We share in the grief of their families. The heirs of the deceased in this accident will be provided with financial assistance of 5 lakh rupees,” Fadnavis wrote on X.
The Pune mishap comes less than a year after tragedy struck on the Jaipur-Ajmer Highway, where an LPG tanker explosion killed at least 18 people and destroyed over 40 vehicles.
More recently, a truck carrying over 100 LPG cylinders overturned while negotiating a sharp curve on the Thanjavur-Ariyalur highway in Tamil Nadu’s Ariyalur district, resulting in a major fire and a series of explosions.
