New Delhi: BJP president JP Nadda reiterated on Monday that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will be implemented soon.

“Due to COVID-19 pandemic, implementation of CAA got delayed. But as the situation is slowly improving, work has started and rules are now being framed. It (CAA) will be implemented very soon,” Nadda said at a meeting of social groups in Siliguri in north Bengal.

“All of you will get the benefits of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. It has been passed in Parliament. We are committed to it,” PTI quoted Nadda as saying.

The controversial act was passed by Parliament during the winter session in December 2019, which led to several protests across the country.

The law assures easier citizenship to non-Muslims like Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Christians, Parsis and Jains who came to India after facing religious persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh before 2015.

As the law excludes persecuted Muslims, the opposition said it discriminates on the basis of religion and violates the Constitution.
