Bhubaneswa: Shilp Samagam Mela, hosted by the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, began at Biju Patnaik Playground in Bhubaneswar’s Baramunda on Friday.
Amit Yadav, Secretary of the Department, alongside senior officials and guests inaugurated the week-long fair, which aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’.
The mela provides a national platform to empower artisans from Scheduled Castes, Backward Classes, Safai Mitras, and DNTs. It enables them to showcase and sell their products, fostering economic independence.
Over 75 artisans from 14 states are participating, displaying a wide array of handicrafts and handlooms. The event also highlights the Ministry’s efforts to provide direct market access to artisans. “The Shilp Samagam Mela is more than a marketplace; it’s a celebration of skill, culture, and resilience, advancing our goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat by uplifting those in need,” Yadav said.
A major focus is the promotion of the “TULIP” (Traditional Artisans’ Upliftment Livelihood Programme) brand, launched on November 5, 2024. TULIP aims to boost artisans’ market presence nationally and globally, ensuring sustainable livelihoods through their products. It will also feature cultural performances by regional artists and a culinary zone with authentic Indian delicacies, offering visitors an engaging experience, an official release said.
