New Delhi: The Indian Navy said on Wednesday it foiled a suspected piracy attempt in the Western Indian Ocean after receiving intelligence about suspicious activity around the merchant vessel MV Mashaallah 1.
Officials said pirates were reportedly preparing to surround and target the merchant ship when Indian naval personnel launched a rapid operation that intercepted and deterred the threat before any attack could be carried out, IANS reported.
INS Kolkata Intercepts
According to the Navy, the warship INS Kolkata rushed to the reported location and began an immediate investigation into the suspicious activities. Officials said the ship’s prompt deployment and presence in the area prevented the situation from escalating into a full-scale piracy incident.
“Responding swiftly to inputs of pirate activity near merchant vessel MV Mashallah 1 in the Western Indian Ocean, INS Kolkata undertook prompt action to investigate and deter the threat. This timely intervention ensured safety of the merchant vessel and prevented a possible piracy attack,” the Indian Navy said in an official statement.
Officials added that naval personnel monitored the suspected pirates’ movements and maintained continuous surveillance of the area, ensuring safe passage for MV Mashaallah 1 through the sensitive maritime zone. They said no hijacking attempt or damage to the vessel was reported, owing to the rapid response.
Regional Security Role
The Navy reiterated its commitment to maritime safety and protection of international shipping lanes. “As a Preferred Security Partner and First Responder in the region, Indian Navy remains committed to safeguarding merchant shipping, countering piracy and ensuring safe and secure seas,” the statement added.
Officials noted that piracy-related incidents have increased in parts of the Western Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden in recent years, posing risks to commercial shipping and trade routes. In response, the Indian Navy maintains a steady operational presence in the region, regularly deploying frontline warships and maritime surveillance assets.
To bolster anti-piracy efforts, the Navy has undertaken joint exercises and coordinated operations with friendly foreign navies, officials said, aiming to improve interoperability and rapid-response capabilities during maritime contingencies.
According to officials, the primary objective of these collaborative drills is to enhance coordination, preparedness and the ability to deal effectively with piracy threats, ensuring the security of international sea lanes.
