New Delhi: Salman Khan suffered a legal setback in the ‘Kala Hiran’ dispute as the Delhi High Court on Friday declined to grant him immediate relief and deferred the hearing to July.
The case pertains to objections raised over the title and content of the proposed film, with the high court choosing not to pass any interim order for now.
A vacation bench headed by Justice Madhu Jain directed Salman’s legal team to provide the filmmakers with a complete set of the petition and all accompanying documents, Live Law India reported.
The court then adjourned the matter to July 1, when it will hear detailed arguments from both sides.
For the unversed, the Bollywood superstar approached the high court seeking to halt the release of ‘Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy’, claiming that the film portrays the 1998 blackbuck poaching case and his alleged conflict with gangster Lawrence Bishnoi without his consent.
The actor’s lawyer, senior Advocate Sandeep Sethi, told the court, “He is producing a film on my life… he has no right. I have not authorised him.”
His lawyers contended that the filmmakers are exploiting Salman’s name, likeness and celebrity persona for commercial purposes.
They argued that although the actor is not explicitly named in the film, its storyline and portrayal bear a strong resemblance to events from his life.
The legal team also highlighted certain visuals used in the film’s promotional material, claiming that the protagonist closely resembles Salman and is shown sporting his trademark turquoise blue bracelet, further reinforcing the connection.
The actor’s legal team also objected to scenes in the teaser showing the character carrying a gun, arguing that they create a false impression, particularly since Salman was acquitted of Arms Act charges.
They claimed that the film misrepresents facts and is attempting to capitalise on elements of his personal life without his permission in order to generate publicity and commercial gains.
The filmmakers’ legal team opposed the plea for an immediate stay on the film’s release.
They told the court that they received only a part of the case documents on Wednesday, and had not yet been served the complete petition.
The defence further said that the makers have been facing intense backlash over the subject of the film.
According to their legal team, members of the production team have received death threats, prompting them to lodge a police complaint and seek protection over concerns for their safety.
Talking about the film, producer Amit Jani had earlier told India Today, “This is not a Salman Khan biopic. The film is based on a larger story involving the Bishnoi community, their struggle, and their deep connection with wildlife. We have tried to bring that story to the screen. I have not shown Salman Khan in a negative light, nor have I glorified Lawrence Bishnoi. The film presents what is already available in the public domain and highlights the beliefs and history of the Bishnoi community.”
