Bhubaneswar: In a significant boost to affordable housing initiatives, the Odisha government has moved to reduce stamp duty and registration charges for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) families availing houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) 2.0.
The charges have been brought down to below 1% for dwelling units measuring up to 60 square metres.
The decision was approved at the recent meeting of the Odisha Cabinet and aligns with Union Housing Ministry guidelines mandating the states to cap such charges below 1% for such dwelling units under PMAY-U 2.0.
Officials described the move as a key step towards making home ownership more accessible for urban poor households by slashing the overall cost of property registration. Currently, the stamp duty and registration fees in Odisha range between 6% and 7%. Under the new provision, the charges will be reduced to 0.6%-0.7%, depending on the gender of the property owner.
Following the Cabinet nod, Additional Chief Secretary, Housing and Urban Development Department, Usha Padhee on Friday wrote to the Revenue and Disaster Management Department seeking an early notification to implement the reduced rates. She has also requested that a copy of the notification be shared for onward submission to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
Once notified, the decision is expected to make the registration process more affordable and and accelerate the pace of housing delivery under PMAY-U 2.0 across the state.
