Dhaka: A bomb blast at a rally in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, injured at least three people on Monday night, organisers said, ANI reported.
The explosion occurred at about 9:45pm at the Savar Thana Stand Eidgah field, where a post-march gathering by the newly formed National Citizen Party (NCP) was under way, the party said in a statement.
“Terrorists detonated a bomb at the post-march rally venue of the NCP in Savar,” the statement added.
The incident took place on the opening day of the group’s “July March,” a nationwide protest drive planned to press several demands — including a referendum, job creation, resolution of the power crisis, curbs on commodity prices and stricter border protection.
The NCP, led by students opposing former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, had announced the countrywide march to mark the second anniversary of the student protests against Hasina.
Sheikh Hasina travelled to India on August 5, 2024. On April 17 this year, India’s Ministry of External Affairs confirmed it was formally examining a request for her extradition through established legal and judicial channels.
