Kolkata: Bengal cricketer Abishek Porel, who plays for Delhi Capitals in the IPL, was on Friday remanded to judicial custody for 14 days after being denied bail in an alleged rape case.
The wicketkeeper-batter was arrested on August 11 in West Bengal’s Hooghly after being questioned by police based on a complaint by a young woman who accused the cricketer of rape, blackmail and other offences.
The complainant, a medical student, has alleged that Porel entered into a relationship with her after promising to marry her. She accused the cricketer of threatening to circulate objectionable photographs after they broke up.
A case was registered against Porel under 19 sections, most of which are non-bailable offences.
The woman’s allegation included an incident in Delhi on April 2, 2026, when she claimed she was illegally confined, denied food and deliberately isolated. She became physically weak and was unable to walk properly, according to the FIR.
The woman further claimed that the two families had discussed marriage, but then she discovered Porel’s alleged involvement with other women.
