Bhubaneswar: Odisha Vigilance sleuths on Monday apprehended Dr. Satyajit Behera, Assistant Surgeon at Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar, while he allegedly accepted a bribe of ₹30,000.
According to vigilance sources, Behera demanded the illegal gratification from a functionary of an NGO engaged by the hospital to assist unidentified and destitute patients arriving at the casualty department. The money was sought in exchange for signing work certificates of the NGO’s employees, which were required to process their salaries for June and July 2026. The NGO representative had been approaching the doctor for the signatures since June but faced repeated demands for the bribe.
Frustrated by the harassment, the complainant approached the vigilance authorities, who laid a trap.
A team from Odisha Vigilance caught the doctor red-handed while accepting the cash. The tainted amount of ₹30,000 was recovered and seized from his possession.
Following the trap, simultaneous searches are underway at three locations linked to Behera from the angle of disproportionate assets. A case has been registered under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018, and further investigation is underway.
