Angul: Amid heatwave warning for Odisha, the Angul, Sundargarh and Ganjam administrations on Wednesday announced an extension of summer vacation for all government and private schools in the district till June 20, with classes now set to resume on June 22.

The move comes as a precautionary measure despite the state government’s earlier plan for schools across Odisha to reopen on June 18 following the extended summer break that began in late April due to soaring temperatures.

The District Education Officer issued the order to safeguard students from the extreme weather, with temperatures in the region remaining significantly high even as monsoon conditions have brought some relief elsewhere in the state. The district administration, in coordination with the education department, has urged parents and guardians to take extra precautions, emphasising the need for proper hydration and limiting children’s exposure to direct sunlight during the intense heat.

“The MeT Department has predicted hot and humid weather conditions as well as thunderstorms for Ganjam district during the next few days. In the interest of public safety and to avert any health casualties, all government, government-aided and private schools up to Class-XII in Ganjam will remain closed till June 20,” said the office order issued by the Ganjam Collector.

Sudargarh and Boudh has issued a similar order.

The Balangir Collector, in a office order, said: In view of the prevailing heat wave condition issued by IMD, Bhubaneswar for Balangir district, all Anganwadi centres, schools, colleges, technical institution and
other educational institution in Balagir district are hereby closed for the period from 18.06.2026 to 20.06.2026.”

It added that examinations scheduled during this period will proceed as planned, preferably in the morning hours to reduce students’ exposure to peak afternoon heat. “The heads of the institutions are advised to make necessary arrangements with precautionary measures for students and staff to conduct the examination.”

Earlier in the day, the administration in Sonepur district had issued a similar order.

Meanwhile, the Nuapada administration has asked the schools to hold morning classes from 6.30 am to 11.30 am till June 20 due to the prevailing hot and humid conditions.
