New Delhi/Dhaka: Bangladesh prime minister Tariq Rahman is expected to visit India in November this year, in what could be a reset of ties between the two neighbours.
Sources told Times Now that both New Delhi and Dhaka have resumed talks for Rahman’s visit.
Dinesh Trivedi, the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka, has consistently made engagement with high-level officials in Bangladesh regarding the visit.
Bilateral talks will be held between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rahman on various issues, during the latter’s visit. These would include India’s border concerns and the issue of illegal immigrants. Trade and renewal of the Ganga water treaty are also likely to be in focus during the talks.
Dhaka is likely to push for a Teesta Waters Treaty and the extradition of former Bangladesh prime minister Sk Hasina.
Rahman was scheduled to visit India for the BRICS Summit. However, his visit was cancelled.
Bangladesh’s state minister for foreign affairs Humaiun Kobir had said earlier this month that his country wanted to “reset” its relationship with India and build a new bilateral engagement based on mutual interests.
His remarks came two days after Bangladesh cancelled Rahman’s visit to India. Dhaka said that Rahman would not attend the BRICS Summit in India, as he was not invited in his capacity as Bangladesh’s prime minister.
Relations between India and Bangladesh have remained strained after New Delhi provided refuge to Hasina after her ouster from the country in 2024.
Bangladesh should move beyond what he called an “excessive preoccupation” with India and adopt a more balanced approach focused on mutual interests, Kobir had said.
“We have to get out of the India fascination. India is just another country, and Bangladesh wants good bilateral relations with it,” he had added.
Sources said that Hasina’s extradition will be a major demand from Bangladesh. She was sentenced to death in absentia by a special tribunal in Bangladesh in November 2025 over alleged “crimes against humanity” during the crackdown on protesters in 2024.
Dhaka has since been seeking her extradition from India. New Delhi has said the extradition request is being examined in accordance with applicable law and established legal procedures.
Hasina has herself said that she plans to return to Bangladesh in December.
