Bhubaneswar: After the arrest of his nephew in connection with the death of a BCA student in Ganjam, Odisha Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena on Monday alleged that the previous BJD government always shielded ‘murderers and rapists.’
The Minister mounted a scathing attack on the opposition party after his nephew, Biswajit Jena, was arrested for abetment of suicide of a woman student of a private engineering college at Golanthara near Brahmapur in Ganjam.
Asserting that no one is considered above the law during the BJP government, he said that even his own nephew was not spared in the investigation. “My nephew’s name had surfaced in the case, and the police have arrested him,” Jena said, asserting that the government was allowing the law to take its own course.
Referring to some incidents during the previous government, Jena claimed that no action was taken against the main accused in the sensational Mamita Meher case and the Mahanga double-murder case.
The Minister alleged that Dibya Shankar Mishra was not arrested in the Mamita Meher case, while Pratap Jena was spared in the Mahanga double-murder case.
Stressing that no one is above the law, and the law is taking its own course, Jena said the present government is not one that covers up incidents or shields anyone.
Many such incidents took place during the previous government, but they did not pay attention to them, he claimed.
Stating that he does not want to point fingers at any one, Jena said the death of the woman student was tragic and unfortunate and such a sensitive matter should not be politicised.
The incident must be investigated properly by the police in a fair and transparent manner, he added.
