New Delhi: In the second strike in a day, Pakistan launched missiles and attack drones at several locations in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday evening. India’s air defences – primarily the S-400 Triumf – intercepted at least 8 incoming missiles. A drone is said to have crashed near the Jammu airport, where air defence guns are firing at targets.
There are also claims that a Pakistan Air Force (PAF) F-16 has been brought down by Indian Air defences. Further details on this are awaited.
A blackout has been declared in Jammu and electricity has been cut-off in certain areas to facilitate the air defence mechanism. Apart from the Jammu airport, the key areas targeted are Samba, R S Pura and Arnia. Multiple explosions have been reported, just as they were over Amritsar early on Thursday.
The explosions were of missiles and drones being destroyed in the air, officials said. People have been ordered to remain indoors as missile fragments are likely to fall from the sky.
In the morning, several missile fragments were found on fields and rooftops around Amritsar.
Officials said that the air defence guns have been put into use as the S-400 missiles may not be able to intercept low-flying drones, flying at slow speeds.
