Mumbai: The Vakola area of Mumbai continues to remain tense, a day after a clash broke out between members of two communities over a protest rally against Tuesday’s terror strike in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir that resulted in the death of 26 persons, mostly tourists from across the country.
According to the police, a youth has been seriously injured in the clash and an FIR has been registered against 15 persons.
There are two versions to what actually happened at Vakola on Saturday evening.
According to one of them, a protest march was taken out by members of a Hindu organization and an altercation began with others over certain slogans. The altercation soon turned physical and the police intervened.
The second version is that both communities participated in the protest march. However, after a while, members of one community started objecting to certain slogans, following which the clash broke out.
The Vakola area of Mumbai is sensitive and has witnessed communal clashes in the past. A senior official said that police patrolling has been increased in the area and all efforts are being made to apprehend the accused.
“Things are peaceful now. Meetings have been held with community leaders and youngsters have been warned against getting involved in any sort of violence. The police will also have to be informed before any more processions are taken out,” the official said.
