New Delhi: The country witnessed its second-highest spike in COVID-19 cases with 3,967 infections being reported in the last 24 hours, taking the total cases to 81,970, according to the Health Ministry.
While the doubling rate in the cases has improved to 14 days, the nation witnessed 100 deaths in a day taking the toll to 2,649.
The coronavirus pandemic continues to grip Maharashtra, making it the worst-hit state with 27,524 cases and 1,019 deaths. With the increase in infection growth, the Maharashtra government has decided to extend lockdown in Mumbai MMR, PMC, Aurangabad, Malegaon, Solapur till May 31, according to media reports.
Besides this, the total cases in Tamil Nadu stands at 9,674, followed by Gujarat (9,591), Delhi (8,470) Rajasthan (4,534), Madhya Pradesh (4,426) and Uttar Pradesh (3,902), the Ministry reported.
Meanwhile, the states are figuring out an exit strategy from the lockdown which is scheduled to end on May 17. The Centre will take the final decision on easing the restrictions soon.
