Bhubaneswar: Jyotiprakash Biswal, a student of FM Autonomous College who sustained serious burns during his bid to save Soumyashree Bisi when she set herself ablaze in Balasore, is still undergoing treatment in hospital.
While doctors at the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack described the health condition of Jyotiprakash as stable, his family claimed that the government is yet to extend any support to them.
Stating that Jyoti’s hands and face suffered serious burns, his father expressed the hope that the government will provide assistance in the treatment.
Meanwhile, head of the burn and plastic surgery department Dr Bibhuti Nayak said Jyoti’s condition is stable, while his hands, face, and lungs are affected by the burns.
Jyoti is expected to recover in another ten days, he said, adding that it may take some more time if grafting is required.
Stating that proper medical treatment is being provided to Jyotiprakash completely free of cost, doctors said he is able to speak properly and eat normal food as per the requirement of a burn patient.
Meanwhile, Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling has said every possible step is being taken to ensure the best medical care for Jyotiprakash.
In a post on X, the Minister said he had spoken to Jyotiprakash’s mother over the phone to enquire about his condition and offer emotional support.
“The government is committed to ensuring that Jyotiprakash receives the best possible treatment. Special instructions have been given to the medical team at SCB to provide focused care. I pray to the Almighty for his speedy recovery,” the Minister said.
Similarly, Cuttack Sadar MLA Prakash Sethi and Cuttack BJP president Sukanta Biswal met Jyotiprakash at the burn ward of the hospital and enquired about his health condition.
Both interacted with the family members of the student and assured them that the state government will provide all necessary support for his treatment.
It may be noted that Soumyashree had set herself on fire on July 12 on the college campus while alleging inaction on her complaint of harassment against Head of the Department (HoD), Samir Kumar Sahu. She sustained over 90% burn injuries and breathed her last on Monday night while undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
The tragic incident has sparked widespread outrage with opposition BJD and Congress targeting the state government over the issue.
