Sambalpur: A minor girl went missing after she allegedly jumped into the Mahanadi River from the Chaunrpur Bridge in Odisha’s Sambalpur.
According to preliminary information, a massive rescue and search operation has been launched following the incident that took place late on Saturday night.
After receiving information, Fire Services personnel rushed to the site and launched a search operation, but strong river currents and darkness hampered rescue efforts.
A team of Town Police also visited the site. The girl, aged around 14 years, was yet to be traced.
The girl, a resident of Mayabagicha area, had reportedly called a neighbour shortly before the incident and informed her that she was about to jump into the river. The call alerted others, following which police and rescue teams rushed to the spot.
Locals said the girl had been speaking with her male friend. Following an argument with him, she told her family that she was going to a neighbour’s house and left home. She is believed to have later met the boy at the bridge, where another argument broke out.
It was claimed that the girl made the call to her neighbour before jumping into the river in the presence of the boy.
Following the incident, the girl’s male friend has been detained for questioning. Police also questioned others, including the young woman who received the call from the missing girl.
