The Income Tax Department has officially extended the deadline for filing ITRs that were originally due on or before July 31, 2025. The new due date is now September 15, 2025.
Official sources said that the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) made this decision after delays in issuing the new ITR forms and the necessary tools (utilities) required for filing. These forms have gone through several changes this year, and the tax department needed more time to prepare the systems and make them ready for public use.
“This extension will provide more time due to significant revisions in ITR forms, system development needs, and TDS credit reflections. This ensures a smoother and more accurate filing experience for everyone. Formal notification will follow,” the I-T department said in a post on X
The extension primarily aids salaried employees and taxpayers whose accounts are not subject to audit, which comprises the bulk of individual tax filers in India. These individuals now get an additional 46 days to prepare, file, and e-verify their returns.
