Phu Quoc: Many of the Indian tourists killed in the tragic boat capsize in Vietnam on Saturday were supposedly employees of Lava Mobiles and residents of Andhra Pradesh.
While initial reports put the death toll at 15, there has not been any official confirmation from authorities as yet. The Indian embassy in Vietnam has also released a list of the names of the 32 Indians on the ill-fated boat, without mentioning how many of them were killed.
“In a tragic incident, a boat carrying several Indian tourists has capsized near Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam,” the embassy said in a post on X.
According to a report by The Indian Express, most of those on the boat were employees and distributors of Lava Mobiles. Many of the dead are believed to be from Andhra Pradesh.
There were three boats with employees and distributors of the Indian company, which was founded in March 2009 and manufactures smartphones, tablets, laptops, computer hardware, and other consumer electronics, it has been reported.
“Exact details of the incident are being ascertained as search and rescue operations by local authorities are ongoing,” the Indian embassy has said.
Andhra Pradesh minister Nara Lokesh held a meeting with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and is closely monitoring the situation, his office said.
Visuals from the site of the incident showed an upturned boat boat, with rescuers searching for survivors in choppy waters. Bodies can be seen lined up on the shore.
